Routes of transmission of S. aureus. Staphylococcus aureus routes of transmission in ICU depends on two factors: (I) the rate of S. aureus carriers which defines the colonization pressure in the units (gray square); (II) the amount of transmission from the carriers to the non-carriers. This transmission could come from the contaminated environment around the carrier or through the hands of the health-care workers.
