Dr. Yao is a graduate of University of Manitoba, Canada, and received his postgraduate medical training in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and medical microbiology at the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, and University of Toronto, respectively. He has been the director of the Hepatitis/HIV Testing Laboratory at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Medical Laboratories in Rochester, Minnesota, U.S.A, since 2002, and is currently an associate professor of medicine and laboratory medicine and pathology at the College of Medicine, Mayo Clinic. He is a member of various professional medical associations, including American College of Physicians, American Society for Microbiology, Infectious Disease Society of America. He served on the CLSI document development committees for M53-A Criteria for Laboratory Testing and Diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection – Approved Guideline (2011) and MM22-A Microarrays for Diagnosis and Monitoring of Infectious Diseases – Approved Guideline (2014). His research interests are in the development of serologic and molecular diagnostic assays for viral hepatitis and HIV.
